This tour is designed for people who want to see the most popular sights of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima during the spring season. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Japanese Alps regions, including Matsumoto, Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa. The tour will finish with a visit to Koyasan - the sacred mountain of Shingon Buddhism, and an overnight stay at one of the temples. Catering to a wide variety of interests, our “Best of Japan” itineraries offer travelers a sample of cultural aspects, architectural styles, nature spots, hot spring baths, contemporary sights, and traditional Japanese cuisine.

Begin your tour in Tokyo, where our private guides and tours will help you navigate through the city’s greatest landmarks, such as Asakusa Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Tower. You will even have the chance to learn how to make your own sushi with a professional chef. Enjoy impressive views of the scenery at Hakone, visiting the sulfurous vents of Owakudani and grand Mt. Fuji. Stay at a Japanese ryokan (traditional inn), where you can relax in the therapeutic waters of a hot spring bath (onsen) and dine on gourmet kaiseki cuisine. Proceed from there to Matsumoto to see imposing Matsumoto "Black Crow" Castle, unspoiled and complete despite the passage of time, before continuing to Takayama. This city is nestled in the Japanese Alps and contains Takayama Jinya - a palatial administrative building used by governors from the Tokugawa shogunate - complete with conference rooms, guest rooms, and an interrogation chamber. From there you'll travel to Shirakawa-go - a UNESCO Heritage site famed for its farmhouses with large thatched roofs called "Gassho- zukuri". Then venture up to Kanazawa to stroll through Kenrokuen Garden - one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan - before taking the Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto.

Spend two days in historic Kyoto, city of a thousand temples which are celebrated for such splendid features as the Golden Pavilion's dazzling phoenix, Kiyomizu Temple's dramatic veranda, and the exacting detail of Tenryuji's Zen garden. Our travel group will have the opportunity to experience a green tea ceremony and meet a maiko (apprentice geisha). Visit Arashiyama, located on the outskirts of Kyoto, where you'll walk beneath the towering stalks of Sagano Bamboo Grove, then see a traditional Zen garden at Tenryuji Temple. Make your way to Nara, where you will visit the extraordinary Todaiji Temple and a park full of 1,000 adorable, free-roaming Sika deer. You will also get to spend time in Osaka, a city with a reputation for its lively night life and shopping districts.

Visit the stately Himeji Castle before touring the picturesque canal town of Kurashiki. Travel to Hiroshima for an eye-opening experience at the Peace Memorial Museum, then continue to Miyajima Island to see the "floating" torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Afterwards, drive through the Shimanami Kaido, a scenic toll road that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku. Journey through the beautiful, unspoiled valleys of the Oboke Gorge on a scenic boat ride. Climb 1,368 stone steps to the Kotohira-gu Shrine, and visit the Japanese landscape masterpiece of Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu. At night, a feast of tender, delectable wagyu beef awaits your palate in Kobe. Then take a short trip back through Osaka, stopping at the Cup Noodles Museum to craft your own original flavor of cup noodles, before heading on towards the temples at Koyasan. On the way, you'll stop at Katsuragi to learn about the history of sumo, and find the fabled point where Jimmu, Japan's legendary first emperor, ascended his throne at Kashihara shrine.

Discover the mountain temples of Koyasan - sacred mountain of the Japanese sect of Shingon Buddhism, and resting place of the temple's founder, Kobo Daishi. Stay overnight in the temple complex, enjoying a healthy vegetarian meal of monks' food. Take part in morning meditation with the monks, and enjoy in-depth tours of Kongobuji Temple - built by legendary samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Okunoin - Japan's largest cemetery, and Danjo Garan - the main temple complex on Koyasan. This tour is ideal for travelers looking to find the perfect selection of Japan's top sights and activities during the pleasantly cool spring season.
