Spring tours in Japan should include some time for flower- gazing, and whether you dream of strolling beneath the bright purple canopy of wisteria vines or wandering among a sea of pink shibazakura (phlox moss), it is one of the nation's most popular seasonal activities. So we offer the following itinerary, full of the UNESCO Heritage Sites, natural wonders, and traditional experiences that describe the Essence of Japan, lightly accented with moments of appreciation for two of Japan's loveliest flowers.

Tour through the busiest city in Japan, Tokyo, where our private guides and drivers will help you navigate through the city’s top attractions. Visit Tokyo’s historical monuments, fashionable neighborhoods, and unique shopping districts. Take a short drive up to the Ashikaga Flower Park to walk under the beguilding beauty of the Wisteria grove, and view the Great Wisteria Tree. These trees are perfectly complemented with carefully planted azaleas, among other flowers. Then take some more time to soak in the Tokyo atmosphere as you witness a Shinto ceremony at Meiji Shrine, and explore Japan's largest and busiest fish market, learn how to make your own sushi with a professional sushi chef and savor your delicious creations.

Then we take you to the Fuji Five Lakes region for the Fuji Shibazakura Festival. Here the local phlox moss, or "shibazakura" covers the area around Lake Motosuko with a lovely carpet of bright pink, white, and purple. Take in the gorgeous natural vista of Lake Kawaguchi including, on a clear day, a magnificent view of iconic Mount Fuji, then travel through the ever-changing scenery to Matsumoto, where you will see the original-standing Matsumoto Castle. Spend a morning at market in Takayama and browse between the outdoor stalls of local handicraft for an quality souvenir. Next, travel to the UNESCO-inscribed village of Shirakawa-go, famous for its charming gassho-zukuri architecture. Head to Kanazawa and stroll through Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s top three gardens. Then take an afternoon to explore your choice local attractions, including a gold leaf workshop, a museum dedicated to Zen scholar DT Suzuki, and a Kutani-ware Ceramics Kiln.

Behold Todaiji Temple in the city of Nara, home to a towering Buddha statue, while nearby, in Nara Park, you can mingle in company of over a thousand adorable, friendly Sika deer. Spend three nights in Kyoto, where you will get to visit the city’s top temples and shrines. Take the chance to learn Japanese calligraphy, Ikebana flower- arranging, and how to play Taiko drums. Try on a colorful kimono, meditate like a Zen Buddhist monk at Kodaiji Temple, participate in a traditional green tea ceremony, and enjoy Kyoto cuisine with entertainment by an apprentice geisha (maiko).

This 10-day tour package combines the historical sights, unique cultural experiences, and gorgeous floral displays to bring you the Essence of Japan Tour: Wisteria and Shibazakura. Please browse our detailed itinerary below.
