Experience all the highlights of Japan during the breathtaking winter season with our 21-day tour across the country. This comprehensive itinerary takes you from Hokkaido through Honshu and even down into Shikoku for an unbeatable look at the country’s winter must-sees.

Start in Hokkaido – Japan’s winter wonderland, where you’ll enjoy what are, without doubt, the region’s most essential seasonal events. The snow festivals of Hokkaido are legendary, and we bring you all the best ones – the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival, Asahikawa Winter Festival, Lake Shikotsu’s Ice Festival, and of course, the Sapporo Snow Festival – known for its mind-blowing, larger-than-life snow creations. But you won’t miss the unique culture of this delightful region, which includes trips to Sapporo’s Odori Park and Historic Village, Otrau’s Sakaimichi and the picturesque Otaru Canals, the Prison Museum of Abashiri, Lake Tofutsu (the wintering grounds of the Whooper Swan), and Lake Akan’s Ainu Kotan village. Observe the dance of the elegant red-crowned crane in Kushiro at the Akan International Crane Center, and watch the adorable red foxes at Kitakitsune Fox Farm. Top experiences include an Ice Breaker Cruise off the coast of Abashiri, Smelt Fishing on Lake Akan, and a tour of the Otokoyama Sake Brewery.

Next, we explore the best winter spots throughout Honshu – including all the top must-see destinations: Tokyo, Hakone, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kanazawa, and Kobe, with two full days taking in Kyoto and Nara’s winter delights. Browse the wares of bustling Tsukiji Market, glimpse Mount Fuji from the Kachi Kachi Ropeway, stroll idyllic Kenrokuen Garden, taste mouthwatering Wagyu Beef, and ponder the austere monuments at the Peace Memorial Park. Discover Kyoto and Nara’s top temples and local experiences – Fushimi Inari, the Golden Pavilion, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple, Gion Geisha District, and Todaiji Temple and Wild Deer Park. While in Kyoto, participate in a traditional Green Tea Ceremony, and watch a live kimono fashion show.

Some highlights of Japan in Honshu are most enchanting during winter, and we included the best of the best for you to enjoy. Bring your camera to photograph such unforgettable winter scenes as the bathing snow monkeys at Yudanaka Onsen, the traditional streets of Old Town Takayama, the preserved canals in Kurashiki, the thatched-roof farmhouses of UNESCO World Heritage Shirakawa-go, snow-white Himeji Castle and pitch-black Matsumoto Castle. But perhaps the most unexpected scene will be the Cherry Blossoms of Kawazu, which bloom a whole month earlier than anywhere else in Japan!

We round off the tour spending a few days exploring Shikoku, with captivating teahouse scene of Ritsurin Park, the 1200 steps of Kotohira-gu Shrine, the seaside views of Shimanami Kaido, and the boat ride through Oboke Gorge being among the top highlights. The entire 21-day tour has private transportation serviced by our sleek and comfortable private coaches (with one ride on the Shinkansen Bullet Train.
