Takasaki (Shorinzan Daruma Temple / Daruma Painting Experience), Karuizawa (Stone Church / Shiraito Waterfall)

In the morning, we depart Toyko for Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture, where we visit Shorinzan Daruma Temple, which is well known for the crafting of adorable daruma dolls. While there, enjoy an experience painting a daruma doll for yourself. Then we travel to the mountain resort town of Karuizawa, first to see the Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church. This distinctive architectural marvel features a series of connecting stone arches, each expanding further and futher outward. Finally, we visit Shiraito Falls. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan, Shiraito Falls appears like a broad curtain of delicate white threads falling over the rocky surface. After, we proceed to the evening's accommodation at Yudanaka.

Day 3

Yudanaka (Snow Monkey Park), Matsumoto (Japan Ukiyoe Museum)

Today, we start with a trip to see the famous snow monkeys of the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. These adorable monkeys can be seen bathing together in a natural hot spring, creating a charming scene of the monkeys in their natural habitat. Then, we travel to Matsumoto, a former castle town containing the Japan Ukiyoe Museum. This art museum preserves works of Hokusai, Eizen, Hiroshige, and other masters. After, we continue to the evening's accommodation at Takayama.

Breakfast / Lunch

Day 4

Takayama (Morning Market / Takayama Jinya / Old Town), Shirakawa-go (Gassho-zukuri Minkaen)

In the morning, we tour Takayama, starting with a visit to one of the city's Morning Markets. Also known as Asaiichi, the Morning Market is an excellent opportunity to browse local wares and handicrafts, or to enjoy watching the interactions of the locals if you don't feel like shopping. From there, we go to Takayama Jinya, a former government office now preserved as a time- capsule of life and the economic workings of the city during the Edo Period. Within, you can see well-preserved offices, residences, conference rooms - even an interrogation room. We travel into the mountains to the village of Shirakawa-go, which was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its heritage buildings preserving the "gassho-zukuri" construction style, featuring thickly thatched sloping roofs folded like hands in prayer. We will tour the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen, which is an open-air museum of buildings that showcase the village's distinct architecture. After, we proceed to the evening's accommodation in Kanazawa.

Breakfast / Dinner

Hotel Nikko Kanazawa or similar class

Day 5

Kanazawa (Kenrokuen Garden / Nagamachi Samurai District - Nomura Samurai House / Gold Leaf Experience)

After breakfast, we tour Kanazawa, beginning with it's most important landmark, Kenrokuen Garden. One of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, Kenrokuen is designed so as to be beautiful in all seasons, according to the six "sublimities" of Chinese landscape garden design. The tour continues to the Nagamachi Samurai District, where the feudal lords of Kanazawa housed their most important retainers. One of the most important of these residences is the Nomura Samurai House, which housed multiple generations of the Nomura samurai family. As you explore the house, you can get a sense of the simple elegance in which the family lived, see their ancestral armor and weapons, and admire the gorgeous backyard garden. Then, attend a Gold Leaf Experience and learn about Kanazawa's signature product, including a hands-on activity where you can try decorating an item with gold leaf. After, we take an express train to Osaka and check in to the evening's accommodation.
