Welcome to Osaka

Welcome to Osaka! We will arrange your private transportation from the airport. Please look for the guide with the All Japan Tours sign.

Day 2

Nara (Kasuga Mountain Trail - Hike from Nara Park, passes through the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest to the 342m summit of Mt. Wakakusa / Todaiji Temple / Kasuga Grand Shrine)

Start the day in Nara on the Kasuga Mountain Trail - a hike that starts at Nara park and passes through the Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest to the 342m summit of Mt. Wakakusa. From the summit you can get a breathtaking view of Nara! You can also see Todaiji Temple, one of Japan’s most famous temples and a landmark of the city. Finally, we can go to the Kasuga Grand Shrine, the family shrine for the powerful Fujiwara clan during the Nara and Heian periods, with unique architectural traits and an area filled with various styled lamps.

Day 3

Koyasan (Visit Kongobuji Temple, Garan & Okunoin with a Monk)

From Nara, travel to Koyasan, and tour the Kongobuji Temple constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to commemorate his mother after death. The Banryutei Rock Garden behind Kongobuji Temple is the largest Zen garden beautifully composed to represent dragons emerging from clouds in the sky. Stay the night at a temple at Koyasan, and enjoy the Shojin Ryori, or "Monk's Food" at the temple. After dinner, take a night stroll around the picturesque Okunoin Cemetery with one of the local monks as your guide.

Day 4

Koyasan (Koyasan Choishi-michi Trail - Hike from Kudoyama Station to Koyasan Station <21 km>)

Start your morning with a session of prayer and meditation with the monks at the temple, followed by a healthy breakfast. Then take the Koyasan Choishi-michi Trail, and hike from Kudoyama Station to Koyasan Station, a distance of 21 kilometers. Be sure to take note of the numbered markers on the trail, formed to represent the five buddhist elements: earth, water, fire, air, and void.

Day 5

Walk from Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine (7 KM / 3 Hours)

Today is a moderate hike from Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine filled with small settlements, teahouses, beautiful hill regions, and green tea fields. This hike is about 7 kilometers and takes about 3 hours.

Day 6

Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, Kumano River Boat Tour, Walk from Daimonzaka to Nachi Fall <2.2 KM>, on the way visit Seigantoji Temple & Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine.

Today, visit the three shrines of the Kumano Sanzan - a UNESCO Heritage site. Start by exploring Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, one of Kumano's three important shrines, built near the Kumano River. From there, take the Kumano River Boat Tour down the mysterious Kumano River, along the same route taken by former emperors and nobility. After, walk from Daimon-zaka, past Seiganto-ji Temple and Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine towards beautiful Nachi Falls. This is a 2.2 km hike.

Day 7

Ise Shima (Mikimoto Pearl Island / Lunch with Pearl Divers )

Ise Shima is an area of Japan famous for pearl harvesting and cultivation, and Mikimoto Pearl Island preserves the story of Kokichi Mikimoto, a businessman who changed pearl production into its more modern forms today through techniques he developed to increase cultivation of pearls. During lunch, enjoy interacting with "Ama" - the female pearl divers whose artful diving style played an important role in the early cultivation of pearls, and who also worked to preserve the oysters from natural disasters.

Day 8

Ise Shima (Ise Jingu Shrine / Oharaimachi / Okage Yokocho)

Next, visit the Ise Jingu Grand Shrine - one of the most important Shinto shrines, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. This shrine is purportedly the keeper of the Sacred Mirror, part of the Imperial Regalia, which legend holds was given to the first emperor by the sun goddess. Finally, visit Oharaimachi, the lane which leads up to Ise Jingu, which is lined with traditional buildings housing many shops and restaurants. Halfway through is Okage Yokocho, a town with a very distinct architecture from as far back as the Edo period.

Day 9

Koka (Miho Museum)

In the morning, travel to Koka to visit the Miho Museum, which exhibits stunning architecture that accentuates the surrounding natural scenery while exhibiting a variety of items from ancient civilizations. It was designed by the renowned architect, I. M. Pei, and is named after Koyama Mihoko, one of the richest women in Japan and the founder of the museum. Then transfer to Kyoto for some free leisure time for the rest of the evening.

Day 10

Kyoto (Arashiyama Walking Tour - from Iwatayama Monkey Park - Togetsukyo Bridge - Tenryuji Temple & Garden - Bamboo Groves - Jojakkoji - Gioji - Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street - Otagi Nenbutsuji - Daikakuji)

Then we will tour the Arashiyama district. First is a visit to the Iwatayama Monkey Park - an open area where hundreds of monkeys roam freely. Then cross the Hozu River over Togetsukyo Bridge before you see Tenryuji Temple, where you can catch a glimpse of the traditional rock landscape garden design. Then proceed through dense bamboo groves past Jojakko-ji Temple (known for its fall colors) and Gio-ji Temple (with a prisitine moss garden). Then head toward the Saka-Toriimoto Preserved Street, walking past traditional townhouses until you reach Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (known for its 1200 stone statues, and finally arriving at Daikaku-ji Temple, a former imperial palace of Emperor Saga.

Day 11

Kyoto (Fushimi-Inari Pilgrimage Hike / Fushimi Sake District - Sake Tasting / Gion Geisha District - Kyoto Kaiseki Cuisine with Geisha Performance)

Today, we will take a hike around the Fushimi Inari Shrine, renowned for its trail of thousands of torii gates. Next, we continue on to the Fushimi Sake District, known for clear waters and home to over 40 traditional sake breweries, where you will have a chance to taste some of the sake. Then we will end our day in the Gion Geisha District, where its streets are lined with ochaya (teahouses), exclusive establishments where guests are entertained by Geisha and Maiko. Here, we will enjoy traditional Kyoto Cuisine accompanied by a special Geisha Performance.

Day 12

Kyoto (Kyoto Walking Tour - from Kiyomizu Temple - Sannenzaka - Ninenzaka - Ishibei-koji - Kodaiji Temple - Maruyama Park - Chion-in Temple - Shorenin Temples - Heian Shrine - Nanzenji Temple - Philosopher's Path - Ginkakuji Temple - Mt. Daimonji-yama)

Today, take a Kyoto Walking Tour which takes the following route around many of the most famous parts of the old capital - Starting at Kiyomizudera - a temple with an iconic wooden stage overlooking the city, and head from there through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka - two historical Kyoto districts. Then stroll through Ishibei-koji, past rows of traditional houses, until you reach the lavish Kodaiji Temple. From there, head to elegant Maruyama Park, famous for its tall "weeping" cherry tree, and make your way toward Chion-in Temple's massive Sanmon Gate. Head toward the Shorenin Temples - famous for their tranquil garden pond, and continue on to Heian Shrine's great reddish Torii Gate. Then on toward Nanzenji Temple (with the Hojo Rock Garden), down the renowned Philosopher's Path to Ginkaku-ji Temple - the "Silver Pavilion". The route ends after a climb up Mt. Daimonji-yama, where hikers are rewarded for their perserverance with a spectacular view of Kyoto from the Daimonji viewpoint.
