Begin with a drive from Sapporo to the city of Tomamu
which, though known in winter for its ski resorts, is a
good locale for river rafting. But be sure to take the
cable car up to the viewpoint on Mt. Tomamu to enjoy a
splendid vista of mountains rising over a sea of clouds.
Then tour beautiful Furano and Biei, known as the top
flower-viewing spot in Hokkaido. The vast fields of
lavenders at Farm Tomita are especially popular. Other
attractions include tulips on Shikisai Hill, the view from
Panorama Road, and the Blue Pond of Biei. Summer
wouldn’t be complete without ice cream, and Furano
has places where you can make your own flavored ice
cream using locally sourced milk – a signature Hokkaido
product.
Next, head over to Asahikawa for seasonal fruit-picking
at a local orchard, then go to Otaru to join a glass-
blowing workshop and visit the Music Box Museum. For
dinner, be sure to check out the Otaru Sushi District to
taste some of the city’s fresh-caught seafood. Then, we
drive to beautiful Lake Toya – a volcanic caldera filled
with clear cobalt-blue water. But the summer evenings
are when Lake Toya truly comes to life, as the sky
overhead explodes with hundreds of fireworks.
After, return to Sapporo, stopping at Shiroi Koibito Park
along the way for some delicious chocolate treats. Then
take time to experience some of the city’s top must-
sees: Nijo Market, Odori Park, Sapporo Beer Museum,
Okura Ski Jump Observatory, Sapporo TV Tower, and
Hokkaido Shrine. Spend some time shopping in the
Susukino District before the tour ends.
