Tohoku is a mountainous region known for beautiful
scenic vistas, historic treasures, and cultural delights
that can’t be found anywhere else. Discover these rare
wonders on a Luxury Tohoku Private Tour, which
features handpicked adventures and exclusive
experiences outside of general tours to Japan. If you are
looking to explore the region of Tohoku in a more in-
depth way, along with luxury accommodations, this is
the tour for you.
Go outside Tokyo to the picturesque town of Nikko,
which is home to opulent Toshogu Shrine – a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Here, you will witness an authentic
Shinto ceremony. Admire Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan
Shrine, and the Iemitsu Mausoleum. While in the area,
see spectacular Kegon Falls, view the scenic beauty of
Lake Chuzenji. Then spend an afternoon in the village of
Ouchijuku, which preserves the buildings and overall
traditional village aesthetic from the Edo period.
From there, proceed to Aizu-Wakamatsu, which
preserves elements of samurai culture from when it was
an important castle town. Visit the reconstructed
Tsuruga Castle, stroll the Oyakuen “Medicinal Herb”
Garden, and explore the Aizu Bukeyashiki Samurai
residence. After, take a drive along the Bandaisan Gold
Line – the most scenic way to view Mount Bandai and
Urabandai, especially in the fall. Walk along a nature
trail that takes you past the enchanted pools of
Goshikinuma, which are each a slightly different shade
of blue. Then take a scenic cruise on Lake Inawashiro,
which sits beneath Mount Bandai.
We head from there to Mount Haguro, stopping along
the way to explore the shrine and public park in Yahiko,
study the copperware production process in Tsubame,
taste delicious sake in Shibata, and seasoned fresh-
caught salmon in Murakami. Finally, we reach Mount
Haguro, which is the gateway to the Three Sacred
Mountains of Dewa. Walk the trail up the mountain to
see an ancient Five-storied Pagoda and enjoy a lunch of
traditional “Shojin Ryori” cuisine at the Saikan near
Haguro Shrine. Then travel to Tsuruoka to view the
jellyfish of Kamo Aqurarium.
We go from there to Sakata, to experience its local
culture. Admire the photographs of local post-war
photographer Ken Domon in a museum dedicated to his
work. Taste the catch of the day at the Sakata Seafood
Market, then go to watch a performance of the Sakata
“Maiko Girls” at Somaro Teahouse, before taking a stroll
along the historic Sankyo Warehouses. After, return to
Tsuruoka to experience its unique local food culture with
a delightful cooking workshop, and discover why it was
certified as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. As
the tour draws to a close, fly back to Tokyo for a day of
leisure enjoyment.
