Tour a choice selection of Japan’s most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites on this 16-day UNESCO World Heritage Luxury Private Tour. Japan has (currently) 25 sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list for their natural beauty, cultural impact, and historical importance, and our tour specialists have crafted this tour to include nine of the most memorable, along with a mix of enriching and immersive cultural experiences.

We begin by visiting the Shrines and Temples of Nikko World Heritage Site, which includes Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan Shrine, and opulent Toshogu Shrine, where you can experience a Shinto ceremony. We spend a couple days in Tokyo touring some of the cultural must- sees of the area: Asakusa Sensoji Temple, Meiji Shrine, and even the Imperial Palace, before departing for Mount Fuji. Far and away the most important of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Mount Fuji has been a source of artistic and cultural inspiration for Japan since its founding thousands of years ago. We spend a day in Kanazawa to admire the Nagamachi Samurai District and beautiful Kenrokuen before continuing on to the Shirakawago World Heritage Site. Inscribed for its preservation of its charming “gassho-zukuri” architectural style, we explore the most impressive thatched-roof houses in the area and then enjoy an experience making soba noodles.

Then we take the bullet train on our way to Hiroshima, stopping on the way to admire magnificent Himeji Castle – inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as one of Japan’s most elegant medieval castles. The castle tour includes nearby Kokoen Garden, which collects nine different Edo-era gardens together in one location. Then in Hiroshima, we tour the stately Peace Park, which includes the UNESCO-inscribed A-Bomb Dome – one of the few buildings to partially survive nuclear attack, now preserved in a state of arrested ruin. Off the coast of Hiroshima is Miyajima Island, which is home to Ituskushima Shrine – a World Heritage site noted for it’s “floating” torii shrine gate.

From there, we spend a couple days touring the Historic Sites of Ancient Kyoto, which include such memorable scenes as the shining phoenix of the Golden Pavilion, the rock garden of Ryoanji, the sacred springs of Kiyomizu Temple, the five-storied pagoda of Toji, palatial Nijo Castle, and Shimogamo Shrine – one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. While touring Kyoto, you can experience the authentic traditional culture of Japan with experiential activities such as introductory lessons in traditional Japanese arts like ikebana, green tea ceremony, and calligraphy, and a dinner of Kyoto kaiseki cuisine with Geisha performance.

After Kyoto, travel to the temple complex of Koyasan, the center of the Shingon school of Japanese Buddhism, a part of the Historic Sites of the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage Site. Explore Kongobuji Temple, hike a portion of the Koyasan Pilgrimage Trails, tour Okunoin (Japan’s largest cemetery) and even stay overnight in a Shukubo Temple Lodging. Finally, visit the Historic Sites of Ancient Nara, and see the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple, the wandering deer of Nara Park, the enormous five-storied pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple, and the ancient temple grounds of Yakushi-ji Temple.

This 16-day UNESCO World Heritage Luxury Tour of Japan is fully customizable, so even if this itinerary doesn’t include the World Heritage Site that you want to see, we can change the tour to fit your vision. Transportation for the tour is facilitated by our sleek and comfortable private coaches, and you will be accompanied by our professional, friendly English- speaking guide.
