WE TRY A POKEMON-THEMED JAPANESE PASTRY - THE MAGIKARP TAIYAKI!

Wandering the streets of the proclaimed otaku capital, Akihabara, is this small little shop selling taiyaki. First off taiyaki is a fish shaped cake that has different fillings, but the most common is red bean paste or anko. Anyways it is a common sweet snack to have and is available pretty much everywhere in Japan. Now what made this shop unique was this poke ball symbol displayed on their sign. Upon closer inspection, these taiyaki were not the typical shaped fish, but were made in the form of a Magikarp or koikingu (コイキング).

In that moment the need to eat the Pokemon shaped snack was eminent. There were two flavors available in the Magikarp shape, which were custard and red bean paste. Despite the difference in pricing, the custard filling was chosen.

After receiving the sweet snack in the designated Pokemon packaging it was time to eat a Magikarp.

The Magikarp was a little warm and within the first bit the custard filling filled the mouth as you realize for the first time “this is what Magikarp tastes like.”
