In Japan, tourism is on the rise, which means more opportunities to make money. If that is the case then how do you know which company is legitimate or just taking advantage of the situation. Here are somethings to look out for if you plan on using any vehicle for your transportation needs.
First why should this information matter to you? Well if you are a passenger in an unlicensed vehicle and something happens like an accident, then it is most likely that you will not be compensated by the company you booked with because they will not be insured.
When you see the van or taxi picking you up make sure you get a good look at the license plate. It will be the major indicator to know if you are getting a ride from a legitimate company involved in tourism or illegal vehicle operating under false pretenses.
Companies that are approved to charge for transportation services will have a green license plate with
white writing. Unlicensed vehicles will have a white license plate with green writing. This is easy to spot and will provide insight into the company you decided to book with.

You can inform the local police at the nearby police box or koban about the vehicle. Also, we recommend that you do not enter the vehicle if you have identified it as illegal.
Police Boxes will have this symbol above the entrance.
