When is the best time to go to Japan? The best time to
go to Japan varies from the experience travelers wish to
receive. Japan is a country that is beautiful all year round
with different activities for every season.
Spring (March to May) is the peak
traveling season in Japan because of its renowned
cherry blossoms, also known as “sakura”. A longtime
tradition many enjoy is “hanami”, or viewing cherry
blossom trees while enjoying a picnic and drinking with
friends. Many travelers mark the cherry blossom season
a must see on their Japan itinerary and visit festivals that
celebrate this beautiful occurrence. In addition to seeing
the short-lived cherry blossoms, visitors can discover
Japan’s charming wisteria flowers. Spring in Japan is
commonly referred to the “best time to visit Japan” due to
the pleasant weather conditions and stunning scenery.
Summer (June to August) in Japan is
celebrated with fireworks throughout the whole country.
Some of the biggest and most well-known festivals are
also celebrated during this time. It’s hard not to run into
some type of festival, including the biggest dance festival
of Awa Odori in Tokushima and the famous Gion Matsuri
in Kyoto. Although the summers can get hot, the people
of Japan celebrate this season with beer gardens and
seasonal food specialties. To help bear the heat,
travelers often head to the northernmost island of Japan
(Hokkaido), allowing cooler temperatures that are perfect
for hiking. Travelers are also granted with fewer crowds
and cheaper prices.
Autumn (September to November) is
also one of the best times to visit Japan for its striking
autumn leaves. Many travelers from across the globe
visit Japan to be surrounded by the scarlet-colored
Japanese maple leaves. The weather during this time is
enjoyable for many, with crisp temperatures and cool
breezes. Visitors will discover several festivals and even
Christmas lights in multiple regions of Japan. This is also
the best time to stroll through gardens and national parks
to indulge in the amber-colored scenery.
Winter (December to February) in
Japan is a magical time to visit, offering various winter
activities and gorgeous landscapes. Japan’s winter
season features remarkable snow festivals, where night
time illuminations and impressive snow sculptures can be
experienced. This includes the increasingly popular
Sapporo Snow Festival in Hokkaido and illuminated
decorations in Tokyo. Winter is also the best time to enjoy
Japanese onsen (hot springs), where many relax in
steamy, therapeutic baths in icy scenery. Top things to do
in Japan’s winter season is to enjoy a cup of hot sake
after enjoying the Japanese hot springs, visit first-rate ski
resorts, and see the famous snow monkeys of
Jigokudani.
