ARTNIA SQUARE ENIX CAFE IN TOKYO: WHAT FANS SHOULD KNOW BEFORE VISITING

If you love Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, or other Square Enix games, ARTNIA is a fun stop to add to your Tokyo itinerary. Located in Higashi Shinjuku, ARTNIA combines an official Square Enix merchandise shop with a café and bar, giving fans a place to eat, shop, and spend some time surrounded by familiar characters and game references.

It is worth knowing that ARTNIA is different from the former Square Enix Cafe in Akihabara, which closed on March 31, 2025. ARTNIA remains open in Shinjuku and continues to offer its regular café menu, official merchandise, and occasional limited-time menus and collaborations.

For travelers already planning to explore Shinjuku, it is relatively easy to work into the day. Here is what to expect before you visit.

WHAT IS ARTNIA SQUARE ENIX?

ARTNIA is an official Square Enix shop, café, and bar in Tokyo. Square Enix describes it as a place designed to connect visitors with its characters and merchandise, and even the name reflects that idea. “ARTNIA” combines the words ART, AREA, and NEAR.

The space is divided into three main areas: the Cafe & Bar Area, Fancy Area, and Luxury Area.

That makes ARTNIA a little different from simply walking into a character store. You can stop for food or a themed drink, browse merchandise, and explore one of the most visually interesting Square Enix spaces in Tokyo during the same visit.

You do not necessarily need to be a serious collector to enjoy it, either. If you grew up playing Final Fantasy, recognize a Slime immediately, or simply have someone in your travel group who loves Japanese games, there is plenty to look at.

WHAT IS THE ARTNIA CAFE LIKE?

The Cafe & Bar Area is surrounded by Square Enix character goods but has a more relaxed atmosphere than you might expect from a character-themed café.

ARTNIA's regular menu includes dishes and desserts such as sandwiches, pancakes, and parfaits along with original drinks. After 5:00 PM, the café transitions into bar time, when alcoholic drinks are also available.

Part of the fun is spotting references to Square Enix games throughout the menu. Rather than visiting solely because you need somewhere to eat, ARTNIA is better approached as another small experience during a day of exploring Tokyo.

Menus can change, and ARTNIA periodically introduces seasonal dishes or limited-time collaborations. If there is a particular menu or character collaboration you hope to experience, check the official ARTNIA website shortly before your visit rather than relying on older photos or menus you find online.

WHAT IS THE LUXURY AREA?

The Luxury Area is probably the part of ARTNIA that feels most like stepping into a Square Enix game.

At the center is an illuminated crystal surrounded by a dark, atmospheric space and the sound of flowing water. For Final Fantasy fans in particular, the crystal immediately feels familiar.

The surrounding displays lean toward higher-end merchandise, including figures, apparel, and accessories.

Even if you do not plan on buying anything, take a moment to walk through this area. The contrast between the bright café and shop and the darker crystal room makes it one of the most memorable parts of ARTNIA and a great place for fans to slow down and look around.

WHAT CAN YOU BUY AT ARTNIA?

The Fancy Area is the main place to browse Square Enix merchandise and souvenirs.

Depending on current stock, you may find plush characters, keychains, collectible figures, CDs, games, apparel, and other goods connected to Square Enix titles. ARTNIA also carries certain official-shop-exclusive products, although individual items can sell out.

This is especially fun if your Japan souvenir list looks a little different from the usual snacks and traditional gifts.

Final Fantasy fans might gravitate toward character figures and accessories, while Dragon Quest fans will probably have a difficult time walking past the Slime merchandise without picking something up.

Collectors should keep in mind that stock changes. If you are visiting specifically for one item, check current information before making a special trip solely to purchase it.

DOES ARTNIA HAVE LIMITED-TIME COLLABORATION CAFES?

Yes. One reason ARTNIA can be worth revisiting is that Square Enix has used the space for limited-time collaborations tied to its games.

Past collaborations have featured titles from franchises including Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, with special food, drinks, merchandise, and character-themed bonuses appearing during different events.

These experiences can operate differently from an ordinary visit to ARTNIA. Depending on the collaboration, reservations, timed entry, special ordering rules, or limited merchandise may apply.

Do not assume that a collaboration you saw on social media will still be running when you arrive in Japan. Many are temporary, and menus can change between different periods of the same event.

Before your trip, check ARTNIA's official website for the latest announcements, menus, and event information.

Merchandise in ARTNIA varies in price and quality. Cups, rings, and more.

DO YOU NEED A RESERVATION FOR ARTNIA?

Reservation requirements can depend on what is happening at ARTNIA during your visit.

For regular visits, café guests may be asked to wait outside when the café is full, with parties seated in order. ARTNIA asks that everyone in the party be present before joining the waiting line.

Special collaboration cafés may have their own reservation systems and rules. Previous collaboration events have offered advance reservations while also accepting same-day guests when seats remained available.

Because these arrangements can change, especially during popular collaborations, check the official information for your travel dates before arriving.

If ARTNIA is one of the main reasons you are visiting Shinjuku, checking ahead is much better than assuming you can walk straight in.

WHERE IS ARTNIA IN TOKYO?

ARTNIA is located on the first floor of Shinjuku East Side Square in Higashi Shinjuku.

Address:
Shinjuku East Side Square 1F
6-27-30 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku
Tokyo 160-0022

Current Hours:
11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Food last order: 8:00 PM
Drink last order: 8:30 PM

ARTNIA has irregular closing days, so checking the official website before visiting is recommended.

The Higashi Shinjuku location also makes ARTNIA fairly easy to combine with a larger day in Shinjuku rather than treating it as an isolated trip across Tokyo.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO IN SHINJUKU?

ARTNIA does not need an entire sightseeing day by itself. We would recommend combining it with other places around Shinjuku based on your interests.

You could explore the shops and department stores around Shinjuku Station, spend some time in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, or return later in the day to experience the bright signs and evening atmosphere around Kabukicho.

Gaming and pop culture fans can also make ARTNIA part of a broader Tokyo itinerary that includes areas such as Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, and Nakano.

This is one of the advantages of planning Tokyo around interests rather than trying to work through a list of famous attractions. Someone who loves Japanese games, anime, fashion, or character goods can have a completely different Tokyo experience from someone primarily interested in temples, museums, and traditional culture.

Other than the Square Enix Cafe, places like Kabukicho in Shinjuku have anime and video game themed shops.

IS ARTNIA WORTH VISITING?

ARTNIA is most worthwhile for travelers who already have some connection to Square Enix games.

If Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, or another Square Enix title has been part of your gaming life, the references, merchandise, themed food, and crystal room make the experience much more meaningful.

It may be less essential for someone with no interest in gaming, especially on a very short first trip to Tokyo. In that situation, spending more time exploring Shinjuku itself may make more sense.

But for fans, that is exactly what makes ARTNIA enjoyable. Not every stop on a Japan itinerary has to be a famous temple, observation deck, or historic landmark. Sometimes visiting somewhere connected to something you genuinely love is what makes the trip feel personal.

ARTNIA VS. THE FORMER SQUARE ENIX CAFE: WHAT TRAVELERS SHOULD KNOW

This distinction is important when researching your trip because older travel articles, videos, and social media posts may still direct you to the Square Enix Cafe in Akihabara.

The Square Enix Cafe Tokyo in Akihabara permanently closed on March 31, 2025. The former Osaka location had already closed in 2021.

ARTNIA in Higashi Shinjuku continues to operate as an official Square Enix shop, café, and bar.

Square Enix also has other related shops and officially licensed locations in Tokyo, so fans planning a gaming-focused day should check current locations rather than relying on an older itinerary.
