Okuhida

Okuhida is located in the mountains of the Northern Japan Alps and is best known as a hot spring destination.

Okuhida

Okuhida (奥飛騨) is located in the rustic region of Gifu Prefecture within the mountains of the Northern Japan Alps. On a technical level it is part of Takayama City. Okuhida is a one-hour bus ride outside the center of Takayama. The city is across the border from Kamikochi and Nagano Prefecture. The area is famous as a hot spring destination and has many outdoor baths with amazing views of the surrounding mountains.

The town has a variety of baths, where many of them have both segregated and mixed gender baths. It is recommended that the best way to enjoy the town is by staying overnight at a ryokan with hot spring baths. During the daytime the public bath houses and several ryokans open their baths to non-staying guests for a fee ranging from 500 to 2000 yen. Hirayu is the oldest and largest onsen town in Okuhida. It is said to have been discovered around the 1560s by Takeda Shingen's troops when they crossed through the Okuhida region.

The Shin-Hotaka Ropeway is a unique ropeway in Japan. Its uses double decker gondola cars, which is the first of its kind in Japan. While in the ropeway car you will have great views of the Okuhida Region. Shin-Hotaka Ropeway has one of the largest elevation gains in the country. It rises over 1000 meters along the side of the Hotake Mountain Range.
