Shibu Onsen has ryokans (Japanese traditional inns) that have been around for more than 400 years. On a gentle slope next to the Yokoyugawa River the onsen town is situated between Yudanaka Onsen and Jigokudani Monkey Park. Strolling down the narrow streets you will be surrounded by an atmosphere that is reminiscent of olden times. There are 9 public bath houses in Shibu that are locked with the exception of 1, the Oyu located in the center of Shibu. The baths can only be accessed by locals and overnight guests who receive a master key by the ryokan, where they are staying. Each bath house has a number with a special name and cure for different ailments. For those who visit all 9 bath houses it is said that good fortune will come to them. You can collect stamp marks at each bath house on a special cloth you can purchase.
