Echigo Tsumari

Echigo Tsumari is a rural region in Niigata Prefecture and is known for the Echigo Tsumari Art Field. The field spans over 760 square kilometers and has over 100 modern art installations display throughout the area. The artworks were created by both Japanese and international artists, who incorporated the local environment and culture. These works can be found in the local town centers, abandoned buildings, schools, or rice fields. The Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale is an event that is held every three years for a few weeks in the summer.

During those weeks, approximately 100 to 200 new artworks are created and displayed along with the permanent installations. The first one was held in 2000 as a way to revitalize the area by attracting visitors to the region. There are smaller festivals in between the years before the Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale. Aside from the art you can enjoy the views of the terraced rice fields, small villages, and forested hills. The region serves as a great place to see the satoyama, the traditional lifestyle of living in harmony with nature. In 2011, the day after the earthquake that hit the eastern part of Japan caused aftershocks that damaged many buildings and artworks in the region. Most of have been repaired since then.
