Onomichi is a small town facing the Seto Inland Sea
located in the eastern portion of Hiroshima Prefecture.
The area of the town features islands separated from the
mainland with connecting bridges of the famous
Shimanami Kaido, a popular structure for a bicycle ride
and a scenic drive, which also connects Shikoku Island to
Honshu Island.
This once important port town used for rice shipments
and foreign trade also provide small ferries departing to
nearby islands, which acts as the perfect destinations for
a day trip. Another important aspect that attracts
thousands of visitors to visit Onomichi town, would be the
densely populated temple sites. Visitors can stroll along
the temple walk, which travel through the town reaching
the 25 temples on this route. The Senkoji Park has
become the top attraction at Onomichi, with Senkoji
Temple located within the area. Many Japanese locals
travel to this location on a spiritual walk of the Chugoku
33 Kannon Pilgrimage, with Senkoji ranking as the 10th
site. The park also provides scenic hikes with a view of
the town from the top of the hill. The Onomichi City Art
Museum designed by Tadao Ando can also be found
within the park attracting both architectural fans and
contemporary art lovers with many exhibitions changing
from season and themes. During the cherry blossom
season, which usually start around late March with the
peak during the first week of April, local citizens gather
together to view the sakura flowers, where the park is
regarded as one of Japan’s top 100 locations to enjoy
“Hanami”. While at the Hirayama Ikuo Museum located
on Ikuchijima Island, visitors can view varies art
masterpieces from this domestic art master, which
features different themes including peace. Be sure to try
