Akiyoshido

The Akiyoshido is located beneath the surface of Akiyoshidai as the largest limestone cave in Japan in terms of length and size. This Natural Monument of Yamaguchi Prefecture hosts a special atmosphere with the temperature in the cave around 17 degrees Celsius all year round, a unique trait that provides visitors an experience of cool in the summer while warm during winter. Although only one kilometer among the nine is open for guests to explore, nonetheless the natural formations can be seen with the length available to stroll upon. Visitors are greeted with running waters and landmark formations including the “Hyakumai-zara” which take the appearance of hundreds of stone plates placed on one another, and the “Donaifuji” pillar that takes the shape of a massive mountain. The “Golden Pillar” or the Kongane-bashira soars 15 meters into the air within Akiyoshido which lies several hundred meters underground. A more slippery path is also available for the more adventurous travelers at a small price to explore more of the natural wonderland. Efforts have been put into making the entrance and strolling paths friendly with wheelchairs in order to provide the scenic natural art to more people all over the world.
