Kagoshima City

Kagoshima city is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture with a population of around 610,000, which is more than one third of the total population of Kagoshima Prefecture. The warm weather and scenic environments attract thousands of visitors to travel here for a weekend getaway. The once vibrant town of Satsuma Province still provides visitors a look into the historical aspects of Japan with its shrines and temples, traditional gardens, museums and specialty cuisines. The Senganen Garden is a traditional landscape garden located along the coast of Kagoshima. Views of the bamboo groves and streams of water at this garden are significantly amplified by the borrowed scenery of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay also known as the art of Shakkei. Seasonal flowers as well as Buddhism artifacts, shrines and museums are available at this garden, which was originally built in 1658 by the Shimazu Clan as a primary residence, now for visitors to explore. While at Kirishima Shrine, travelers can experience the atmosphere of this spiritual area, which is said to be the location where Ninigi no Mikoto descended from heaven bringing the three imperial regalia to rule over Earth. Built on the site of a former castle, the Reimeikan Museum exhibits historical information of Kagoshima with large scale models of the former villages and artifacts of the ruling Shimazu Clan. After a day tour of Kagoshima, relax and enjoy some specialty cuisines including, Kurobuta, Kuroushi, Satsumaage and Kibinago. Some Satsuma Shochu made with famous sweet potatoes in the area, will always be available at every restaurant to help wash all the delicious food down into the stomach.
