The largest city and capital of Nagasaki Prefecture located on Kyushu Island.
Nagasaki City is the largest city and capital of Nagasaki
Prefecture located on the island of Kyushu. This once
small fishing village was heavily influence by foreign
culture and religion and acted as the window to the rest
of the world. During a period of complete isolation in
Japan, Nagasaki acted as one of the ports that were
excluded to this restriction. Many of the popular tourist
locations offer more than just Japanese culture and
atmosphere, with many locals saying it feels like traveling
abroad, rather than another prefecture in Japan. Another
event that gave fame to Nagasaki during World War 2
was none other than the atomic bombings. As an active
military naval base for the Imperial Japanese Navy and
the center of shipbuilding for the Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries during the Meiji Restoration, on August 9,
1945, Japan was the first country in the world to receive
the second highest technological advancement weaponry
in military history. The destructive power of the bomb still
impact many of us today, with parks and locations
dedicated towards those who passed away from this
tragic incident. The Nagasaki Peace Park is a mixture of
a museum, a giant memorial as well as the original
location that took the impact of the bomb. Visitors today
can learn about the atomic bomb and witness some of
the objects destroyed during that time.
Visitors can stroll along one of the largest China Towns in
Japan, which was established in the 17th century by local
Chinese residents living at Nagasaki. A special mixture
between the two cultures gives birth to a unique area
offering special Chinese cuisines for travelers to
experience. While at Kofukuji Temple, visitors can tour
the oldest Chinese temple built by Chinese merchants, a
cocktail of Ming Architecture with Japanese style traits.
