Oita Prefecture

A popular hot spring paradise located at Kyushu Island known for the eight hells of Beppu.

Oita Prefecture is on the north-eastern area of Kyushu Island bordered by Miyazaki Prefecture to the south, Fukuoka and Kumamoto Prefectures to the west with Shikoku Island to the east. Oita Prefecture is most well-known for the eight hells of Beppu, which is one of the most famous hot spring areas in Japan. A wide variety of baths is offered at this location including mud baths and sand baths. Local street food at the osen areas are made with local ingredients using hot spring steams to enhance the overall natural favors of the food. The hells of Beppu attract thousands of travelers as a viewing area of the iconic hot springs of Oita. One of the famous springs also known as the landmark of the hells of Buppu is the Chinoike Jigoku or Bloody hell spring, which glows with a slightly natural crimson red. Yufuin city is another hot spring resort area mainly developed into the perfect location for a day trip in Oita prefecture. The art museums, cafes and boutiques shops allow visitors to tour after a nice hot spring bath at the traditional ryokans. The town of Usuki, which was once a prosperous castle town, offers visitors a chance to explore the traditional samurai districts of Japan, as well as the national treasures of the stone Buddha statues sculpted over a thousand years ago. The Edo style architectures, along the Nioza Historical Road offer an area for visitors to enjoy both the residence of former elite samurai lords and also shops with local specialties and crafts. While the national Buddhism treasures of Japan located 5 kilometers southwest from Usuki’s city center can be toured by travelers, an area offering both religion and beautiful sceneries of Oita.
